    The Persistent Weak Layer from the November dry spell continues to be our biggest threat. (WEAK LAYER DETAILED TIMELINE HERE) As we bury it deeper, the avalanches get deeper. It is clearly still active as I continue to experience collapsing or "whumpfing" of the snowpack. This is when the snow makes a noticeable "whumpf" noise under you. Next to recent avalanches, this is the biggest clue of unstable snow.

    I am quite concerned that someone is going to get caught this weekend. This buried weak layer is still going to be active and capable of producing avalanches for a while to come. With all the new snow, people are excited to get out into it. The weather looks beautiful for the weekend and I'm guessing lots of people will get into the mountains. This smells like trouble to me.

Recent Activity

No new avalanches have been reported on the Skyline but visibility has been poor and not many people have been out. There was one VERY close call with a skier getting caught, carried and seriously injured in an avalanche in the Salt Lake are mountains on Tuesday. DETAILS HERE

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: Snow continued to trickle in on Tuesday with a few more inches accumulation. Totals since Sunday night are around a foot or a bit more. Temperatures have been in the teens and the wind has been from the west with light to moderate speeds. It's lightly snowing as of 6am.

Mountain Weather: We'll see clouds with the chance for periods of light snow today. Temperatures will stay in the teens. The wind will be from the west northwest and should stay fairly light in speed. Thursday looks cloudy with continued chances for light snow. Things start to clear up for the weekend. Unfortunately, the storm that was shaping up for next week looks like it's not really going to happen now.
