Highlights

Wind blown snow and wet snow will contribute to the avalanche hazard today. Be on the lookout for signs of wind effected snow and wet surface snow, If you find either change routes and find a safer alternative. Triggering an avalanche is possible today and could result in an avalanche large enough to bury a person.

    New snow between March 30 and April 1 was accompanied by 100+ MPH winds during the storm system. As skies clear today wind direction has shifted to the East, creating fresh wind slabs on leeward slopes. With a full compass rose of wind slabs near and above treeline, stay vigilant in the back country for signs of wind slabs and any instability. If you see blowing snow, fresh cracks in the surface snow or large wind drifted features on the slopes, back off and find a safer alternative.  Bed surfaces in the alpine are fast and firm in locations where wind scoured terrain exists.

    Today,  a high of 44F, clear skies and  light winds will provide the warmth needed to bring out loose wet concerns.  Solar input will quickly warm the new surface snow creating surface instability and create an environment primed for wet loose avalanches. As the day warms up watch for any signs of instability, roller balls, pin wheels, punchy snow and wet snow. The snow surrounding exposed rock and cliff bands will warm first.  If you begin to see signs of wet snow, back off the slope and consider other route options.

Avalanche Discussion

Storm totals at the Leavitt Lake Snotel showed a gain of #.2 inches of SWE and 17 inches of snow.  Minimal snow accumlated at lower elveations.
