Highlights

The higher elevations have received 6 to 8 inches of new snow with 0.5 to 0.75 inches of moisture since early yesterday morning. At the upper elevations there are two crust layers that could be potential sliding surfaces. One formed on Friday when the freezing level rose to an elevation of around 9,800 feet. The other exists at the base of the snowpack on steep north facing terrain above an elevation of 9,000 feet. Carefully evaluate the bond in the snowpack between the overlying snow and these crusts. Assess terrain for the consequences of potential slab avalanche releases on these crusts. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 9,000 feet.

    In exposed terrain at the upper elevations strong gusty winds have formed areas of wind-packed snow and dense surface slabs. Small pockets of dense wind slab 6 to 12 inches in depth have some potential to be triggered by humans on steep rollovers and in steep avalanche starting zones. Larger slabs up to 18 inches in depth that lie upon a hard crust at the base of the snowpack are expected to be difficult to trigger, however they should be treated as a hazard with potentially serious consequences.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The best snow producing dynamics of this storm system are shifting east. Snowfall intensity will decrease overnight. A mix of clouds and sunshine with areas of snow showers are forecast for Monday. Westerly winds will subside to speeds of 15 to 25 with gusts to 35 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the teens and 20s at the higher elevations and in the mid-30s in the valleys.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW. At the upper elevations strong winds have created pockets of dense wind slab. Isolated areas of instability may exist in association with the two different buried crusts discussed. Some potential exist for humans to trigger dense wind slabs 6 to 18 inches deep on Friday’s crust. Dense slabs, up to 2 feet in depth, that lie on the hard crust at the base of the snowpack could be a serious problem if triggered by humans who venture into extreme terrain. Evaluate the snowpack carefully. Small avalanches can cause serious injuries if skiers, riders or hunters are swept into rocky areas, over cliffs or into terrain traps. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 9,000 feet.
