Moderate avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area

In some places avalanches can be triggered in the weakly bonded old snow and reach a dangerous size. This applies especially in little used backcountry terrain. The avalanche prone locations are rare but are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for defensive route selection.

From southern Valais through northern Ticino into the inneralpine regions of Grisons, weak layers exist deep in the old snowpack. Last week, individual large avalanches were triggered in these layers by people. Although rare, these avalanche prone locations are unrecognisable as such. Further north, the bonding of the snowpack is more favourable. In some places, however, in particular in northern Valais and the western part of the northern flank of the Alps, the snowpack contains weak layers in which avalanches can be released. Exceptionally little snow is lying on the southern flank of the Alps; many measuring stations are recording the lowest ever amounts for this time of year. The snowpack has been influenced by the wind and warm temperatures and is variable.

In Ticino the night will be partly overcast and a few snowflakes will fall even at low altitudes. In the morning, the cloud will disperse and the weather will become increasingly sunny. On each of the coming days it will be quite sunny in the mountains despite occasionally extensive high-altitude cloud. The wind will be mostly light from northerly directions. The danger of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, but only slowly in the inneralpine regions. On steep sunny slopes on the northern flank of the Alps in particular, individual gliding avalanches are still to be expected.
