Avalanche Activity

Be careful, many rocks hidden by fresh snow. The fresh wind slabs are small and in some cases prone to triggering.

As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from westerly directions, wind slabs formed on Wednesday. They are covered with new snow and therefore barely recognisable. Little snow fell on Saturday. In addition mostly small wind slabs formed adjacent to ridgelines on west, northwest and north facing slopes and generally in the high Alpine regions. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can still be released, especially adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas, and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example, in particular on very steep slopes. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last seven days. The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a little snow is lying. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2600 m a little snow is lying. At low and intermediate altitudes only a little snow is now lying. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in all aspects.

Tendency

As a consequence of warming and solar radiation, the natural activity of small moist avalanches will increase.
