Mount Shasta

Avalanche danger is LOW and generally safe conditions exist today. Above treeline watch for wind-blown snow which can form unstable wind slabs on the down-wind side of ridges. There is low snow-cover in some areas of the forecast zone, so watch out for rocks, logs, and other obstacles. 

While there isn't an abundance of snow available for transport, blowing snow has been observed and some wind slab formation is possible in the alpine. Wind slabs are often shaped like lenses or pillows and can sound hollow and drum-like when traveling over them. As the snowpack settles and increases in density it has become more supportable to the weight of people and snowmobiles, but there are still hidden obstacles to be aware of, especially if snowmobiling in the Old Ski Bowl. 

Everitt Memorial Highway (EMH) will be OPEN today. The road to Castle Lake is still CLOSED, and there is no estimate on when it will open.

Pilgrim Creek and Deer Mountain Snowmobile Parks are OPEN. These are the best places for snowmobiling at this time. Some grooming operations have commenced. Click here for a map and more info
