Highlights

The avalanche danger is greatest at higher elevations where there is fresh wind-drifted snow. This wind-drifted snow will likely stabilize quickly due to mild temperatures, but exercise caution in high mountain areas where temperatures are lower and there has been more wind.

There is considerable uncertainty regarding persistent weak layers high in the mountains. They are likely buried deep beneath the wind-drifted snow in many places, but signs from stability tests and “whoomph” sounds in the snowpack indicate that these weak layers are present. Large avalanches cannot be ruled out, especially if the snowpack is subjected to a significant additional load.

In the lowlands, the avalanche danger is generally lower.

Avalanche Activity

The avalanche danger is greatest at higher elevations where there is fresh wind-drifted snow. This wind-drifted snow will likely stabilize quickly due to mild temperatures, but exercise caution in high mountain areas where temperatures are lower and there has been more wind. Skredfaren er størst i høyden hvor det finnes fersk fokksnø. Fokksnøen stabiliserer seg trolig raskt grunnet milde temperaturer, men utvis varsomhet høyt til fjells hvor temperaturene er kaldere og det har vært mer vind.

Det er mye usikkerhet knyttet til vedvarende svake lag høyt til fjells. De ligger trolig dypt under fokksnøen mange steder, men utslag på stabilitetstester og drønn i snødekket viser at de svake lagene er til stede. Store skred kan ikke utelukkes, særlig dersom snødekket får stor tilleggsbelastning.

Snowpack Structure

Litt nysnø de siste dagene har lagt seg oppå et snødekke som er svært preget av mildvær de siste ukene. Under 400-500 moh er det gamle snødekket smelteomvandlet og grovkornet. I høyden finnes det tørr vindpåvirket snø. Dominerende vindretning den siste tida har vært fra vest-sørvest. På rygger og andre vindutsatte steder er det avblåst til skare.

Det er blitt observert et aktivt kantkornlag høyt i snødekket, som ga både drønn og utslag på stabilitetstester de siste dagene. Dyperliggende kantkornlag antas å være generelt vanskelig å påvirke, men eventuelle skred kan bli store. Status for disse lagene er usikker.

Tendency

Fresh wind slabs will build up, mainly in terrain facing southwest to west. Be aware that periods of clear weather in recent nights may have led to the formation of faceted crystals high in the snowpack, where cold new snow lies on top of moist snow. As a result, wind-drifted snow may take longer than normal to stabilize.

There are also persistent weak layers in the snowpack at higher elevations, and although it is generally unlikely for a skier to affect these, large avalanches may be triggered with significant additional loading, such as a cornice collapse or a snowmobile.

Several reports of cornice collapses in the neighboring Lyngen region that have triggered large avalanches in recent days mean that extreme caution is recommended when traveling near cornices, especially those overhanging toward the north and east.
