Regions: Kananaskis.

Still pretty good skiing out there right now with a classic "dust on crust" situation. North aspects have a less pronounced crust in the alpine.

Moderate -

Weather Forecast

Yes, its still winter for at least another day. Minus 17 overnight with an afternoon high of -8 for tomorrow. Winds will be light and mostly from the east, but we are expecting a wind shift in the evening. We may see up to 8cm of snow fall as this wind shift occurs.

Avalanche Summary

Nothing was noted today.

Snowpack Summary

Valley bottom is a typical spring snowpack with several crusts offering good travel. At about 2250m the crusts start to peter out and the snow pack feels much more wintery. On south aspects the crusts continue much higher, but on the more polar aspects the crusts eventually give way to a well settled snow pack with isolated windslabs in immediate lee areas.

Terrain and Travel

  • Recent wind has varied in direction so watch for wind slabs on all aspects.
  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind affected terrain.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Windslabs can be found in the alpine along ridgelines and in gullied terrain. Watch for these slabs overlying a crust on solar aspects. Some snow and slab formation is expected tomorrow.

Aspects: All aspects.
