Weather Forecast

Friday night: a low of -28 at 1300m with the possibility of some light flurries. Moderate northeast winds in the north of the region and moderate southeast down south.

Saturday: some light flurries with moderate northeast winds and temperatures steady around -27 at 1300m.

Sunday: some light flurries possible with moderate to strong northeast winds in the north and light to moderate in the south. Temperatures steady around -28 at 1300m.

Monday: possibility of some light flurries in the afternoon. winds in the alpine will be moderate from the northwest with a high of -29 at 1300m.

Avalanche Summary

On Thursday our field team observed some natural avalanche activity up to size 1.5 in steep or extreme terrain in the treeline while in the southern part of the forecast region.

Explosives on thursday produced wind slabs up too size 1.5 in treeline and alpine start zones with limited propagation.

Snowpack Summary

Wind has varied in direction throughout the region over the last few days. Wind slab could be found on all aspects. Sensitivity to triggering will be greatest in the southern part of the region where recent snowfall amounts were greatest.

 

A surface hoar layer up to size 4 was recently buried, it is not yet a problem.

Snowpack depth at treeline typically ranges from 100-250 cm, with the shallower value mainly on the eastern side of the range and the deepest snowpack around Renshaw.

Terrain and Travel

  • Recent wind has varied in direction so watch for wind slabs on all aspects.
  • Seek out wind sheltered terrain below treeline where you can avoid wind slabs and find great riding.
  • Avoid freshly wind loaded terrain features.

Another 17cm of low density snow fell recently in the Renshaw area, wind slabs will be most reactive in this area. Sensitivity to triggering will be greatest on northeast aspects in this area. In the North of the region winds have been generally from the north meaning wind slab will be most likely found on southerly aspects.
