Snowpack

The fresh wind-drifted snow in the north is prone to triggering in places. In addition, some older wind slabs are lying on angular weak layers and may be triggered by people. Deeper in the snowpack, there are hardly any weak layers prone to triggering, so fractures deeper in the snowpack are not generally expected.

Below approximately 2200 m, the snowpack remains weakened by the influence of mild temperatures and rain. Moist avalanches are still possible, with the danger increasing on sunny slopes as the day progresses. Medium-sized and sometimes large gliding avalanches are also possible at any time of day in all regions, except on the southern flank of the Alps.

Weather forecast until Saturday, 27.01.2024

On Friday evening and in the first half of the night, some precipitation will fall widely. Only the southern flank of the Alps will remain dry. The snowfall level will drop from 1800 to 1600 m in the west and from 1600 to 1400 m in the east. When the precipitation ends, the sky will clear rapidly from the west. It will be sunny during the day.

New snow

The following amounts of fresh snow are expected above 2000 m from Friday noon until Friday night into Saturday:

• Northern Alpine Ridge from the Lötschental to the Alpstein: 10 to 15 cm;
• Prättigau, Silvretta: 5 to 10 cm;
• less elsewhere, dry in the south.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between +4 °C in the west and 0 °C in the east.

Wind

There will be a northwesterly to northerly wind:

• strong to storm force at high altitudes during the snowfall, moderate to strong during the day in the south and east;
• otherwise mostly weak to moderate.

Weather review for Friday, 26.01.2024

The night was often overcast on the central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps. Otherwise it was quite a clear night. In the early morning, it was partly sunny in the south and east. Precipitation set in in the afternoon in the north. The snowfall level was at 2000 m.

New snow

There were a few centimetres of fresh snow in the north above 2200 m.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, +5 °C in the west and south, +3 °C in the north and east.

Wind

Winds were moderate to strong, blowing from a westerly to northerly direction.

TrendSunday and Monday

On both days it will be sunny with light winds and very mild. The zero-degree level will rise from 2800 m on Sunday morning to around 3400 m on Monday.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. As a result of of solar radiation and the mild temperatures, wet avalanches are possible, especially on sunny slopes. Gliding avalanches are still to be expected in all aspects.
