Winter is creeping in but it's still a little early for skiing in Glacier National Park. Expect to walk a ways through the rain to get to any snow. Watch for windslabs and use caution on glaciers where crevasses are very shallowly bridged.
Snowpack Summary
Snowline is at approximately 1700m, with 20cm of snow at 1900m on Oct 30. Since then freezing levels have risen; it is presently +2'C at 2150m and Fidelity has received 10mm of rain in the past 24hrs. Expect small pockets of windslab in lee areas and use caution on glaciers where crevasses will be thinly bridged. A rain crust exists at the base.
Avalanche Summary
A few small, loose avalanches were observed on October 30th.
Problems
Loose Dry
Loose Dry avalanches are the release of dry unconsolidated snow and typically occur within layers of soft snow near the surface of the snowpack. These avalanches start at a point and entrain snow as they move downhill, forming a fan-shaped avalanche. Other names for loose-dry avalanches include point-release avalanches or sluffs.
