Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE at the upper elevations and LOW at elevations below 9,000 feet. Backcountry travelers could trigger surface slabs up to 18 inches in depth on steep, wind loaded aspects near ridgecrests or in gullies. The second or later person on a slope may be the trigger. Slides have the potential of pulling out deeper layers, particularly in areas near cliff bands and rock outcroppings where the shallower snow is more faceted. At the low elevations, past rain and below freezing overnight temperatures have led to mostly stable conditions. Rain is possible at low elevations and could increase the chance of wet loose slides in the afternoon in steep areas.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow is to continue into Tuesday morning with additional accumulations of 3-4" expected at the higher elevations throughout Western Wyoming. The chance for snow showers will continue on Tuesday. Temperatures are to cool slightly during this period and continued, moderate, Southwest winds are expected. AVALANCHE HAZARD FOR THE TETON, TOGWOTEE PASS/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE AND GREYS RIVER/SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREASTuesday the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE at the upper and mid elevations and LOW at low elevations. Backcountry users will be able to trigger sensitive new surface slabs and sluffs to a foot in depth on a variety of aspects. Due to relatively moderate winds and snowfall these slabs will be very soft and shallow and will be most dangerous in areas of high consequence such as terrain traps and exposed terrain. Some potential remains to trigger deeper hard slabs, totalling up to three feet, at the high elevations, particularly in the Togwotee and Southwest Trails areas where buried weak layers are more prominent.Backcountry users are advised to consult area specific forecasts issued every morning as new information may become available and unexpected weather can change conditions.
