You can trigger an avalanche in freshly drifted snow at upper elevation. Recent winds and fresh snow created slabs that rests on a weak layer about twelve to eighteen inches below the surface. Look for recent avalanches, cracking in the new snow, smooth, rounded pillows of snow, or fresh cornices. If you experience these signs of unstable snow, stick to slopes less than about 30 degrees for safer travel options.
