Highlights

Conditions remain dangerous due to the size of the persistent slabs, their sensitivity to human triggers, their distribution with respect to aspect and elevation, and the variability in the weak layers beneath these slabs. Yesterday a snowmobiler was caught, completely buried and rescued without injury by a slab avalanche near Togwotee Pass. Snowmobilers in the Snake River Range also triggered large slab avalanches on steep west-facing slopes. Similar events are likely today. Although these dangerous slabs could be triggered in the early morning hours, they will be more sensitive to failure during the warmer portion of the day. Expert knowledge and patience are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain today.

    Large persistent slabs continue to be triggered on a variety of aspects, and are likely to be human triggered today. East and southeast aspects have continually been the most active. At the mid and upper elevations these slabs could have crown depths of three to five feet. At the lower elevations these slabs could have crown depths of one to three feet. Previous tracks on a slope may not be an indication of stability. Today's sunshine and warm temperatures will increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers. Persistent slabs warrant a patient approach to safely navigate potentially suspect terrain.

Skies will be clear. Temperatures will be inverted. Overnight lows will drop into the teens at 10,500 feet and to around zero in the valleys. Daytime highs will rise into the 20s and 30s. Winds will be light and variable.Large persistent slabs with depths of two to five feet could be human triggered on a variety of aspects at the mid and upper elevations where the general avalanche hazard will be CONSIDERABLE. Persistent slabs with depths of one to three feet could be human triggered at the lower elevations were the general avalanche hazard will be MODERATE.
