Heed: small fresh snowdrift masses at high altitudes

Moderate-to-strong NW winds are generating small snowdrift masses, not well bonded with the old snowpack surface esp. on shady slopes, thus, prone to triggering. At intermediate altitudes the snowpack is losing its firmnes due to warmth.

On Thursday, a little bit of everything. Sunny phases, then dense clouds, some rainfall, some snowfall, in other words, April weather. The snowfall level will ascend to nearly 1600 m during the day. At 2000 m: -2 degrees, milder in the evening.

Avalanche danger is low. The few danger zones occur mostly near ridgelines and behind abrupt drops in the terrain on shady and east-facing slopes above 2000 m. Wet loose-snow avalanches are possible on extremely steep slopes.

Friday: a warm front will bring precipitation and higher temperatures at all altitudes. Gray skies from the start, the peaks hidden in dense cloud. In the Dachstein region rainfall and snowfall in the morning, later spreading to other regions. Snowfall level will ascend to 2200-2400 m by afternoon, the amounts of precipitation will be minor. The wet-snow problem will intensify somewhat.
