Wind slabs at high altitude. Dry slab avalanches are the main danger.

In the last few days the wind was moderate to strong. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in steep terrain in high Alpine regions and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. The wind slabs can be released by large loads in particular.

Snowpack Structure

The wind was moderate to strong. The sometimes large wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack in particular on north to east to southeast facing aspects above approximately 2400 m. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, in particular at high altitude. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
