Avalanche Problems

Deep Persistent Slabs

In the alpine a suspected basal weak layer has been responsible for very large and destructive avalanches recently. This weakness has been triggered by explosives and skiers in shallow snowpack areas.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 3 - 4

Wind Slabs

Steady moderate to strong SW wind in recent days has loaded leeward terrain. A size 3 skier accidental on Thursday indicates the possibility of large skier triggered avalanches. This involvement occurred in a SE facing alpine gully.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3
