Forecasters were experiencing whumpfs along ridgelines at treeline today indicating that the deep persistent layers are still sensitive to human triggering. Conservative terrain choices are a good idea!

Weather Forecast

Temperatures on the 28th will be in the -13 range mid day. The forecast is calling for a mix of sun and cloud, winds lights out of the NW and no new precipitation. Later this week we may get a bit of a re-set with 5-10cm of snow coming on sunday.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanche observations.

Snowpack Summary

Last weeks storm snow continues to settle and become more cohesive. In alpine areas windslabs have been developing over the past few days but these problems are not as widespread at treeline. The Dec 20th interface is gaining strength but our main concern right now is the basal facets. Today forecasters were getting whumpfing, cracking and sudden collapse test results in the basal facets down 110cm. All of these results indicate that the snowpack is still sensitive to human triggering and if it goes, it will go big.

Terrain and Travel

  • Conditions may have improved, but be mindful that deep instabilities are still present.
  • Be mindful that deep instabilities are still present and have produced recent large avalanches.
  • Avoid freshly wind loaded features, especially near ridge crests, roll-overs and in steep terrain.
