Regions: Glacier.

The Winter Permit System is now in effect. Large areas of Glacier National Park are CLOSED for avalanche control using EXPLOSIVES. Daily or annual permits are required to access winter restricted areas. Access info at Rogers Pass Discovery Centre.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

The last storm deposited 25 cm of low density snow with mild temperatures and SW winds. Over the past 3 days, soft slab avalanches to size 2.5 have been observed in the alpine. They were likely triggered during periods of rapid windloading.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Wind Slabs

Over the past 24 hours, winds have shifted from prevailing SW to the NE. Recent low density storm snow will have been reverse loaded onto lee slopes, forming pockets of wind slab. Current cold temperatures should help break these wind slabs down.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South, South West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Persistent Slabs

A surface hoar layer is buried up to 100 cm deep. It has become less sensitive to skier triggering but remains a concern. Snowpack tests give sudden planar results. Avalanches triggered in upper layers may step down to this persistent layer.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3
