Avalanche Forecast

Issued: Nov 25th, 2011 2:46PM

The alpine rating is considerable, the treeline rating is considerable, and the below treeline rating is moderate. Known problems include Wind Slabs and Deep Persistent Slabs.

Good early-season snowpack, but surface slab avalanche danger and deeper potential releases on buried ice crusts are a concern. Conservative route selection is recommended this weekend.

Summary

Problems

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs
The midweek storm brought 40-50cms of mostly heavier moist snow to the area. Cooler snow deposited more recently has been affected by strong westerly winds, creating potential for surface slabs over this heavier midpack.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood

Possible

Expected Size

1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

An icon showing Deep Persistent Slabs
A couple of mid-sized slab avalanches occurred from steep northeasterly bowls during the storm this week. Basal ice crusts and weak layers near the ground are the main concern, and may be overloaded by continuing light snowfall and strong winds.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Possible

Expected Size

2 - 4
