Don't let sunny skies, lack of avalanche activity or previously skied slopes cloud your judgement. Cautious route-finding and careful terrain selection are still necessary due to a weak layer down about one meter.

Summary

Problems

Persistent Slabs

An icon showing Persistent Slabs
Around a meter of cohesive slab overlies 2 significant weak layers. These layers are reactive and can still be triggered by a skier/rider. Wide propagations and remote triggering are likely. These layers are most sensitive at treeline and below.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood

Possible - Likely

Expected Size

1 - 3

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs
Look for dense, wind-deposited snow on lee slopes from southerly winds. Pockets of wind-loaded snow and areas of hard slab could catch you by surprise. These may be triggered by skiers and step down to the persistent weak layers below.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Possible - Likely
