Snowpack Summary

At the Madeleine Mines on Monday, we could find 2 to 4 cm of new snow on the crust formed after the heat of the weekend. It is possible that a few more centimetres could be found on Tuesday morning. The good news is that the snow under this crust was already supporting the weight of a skier at the tree line on Monday. Although we felt the crust, skiing was still possible. Underneath this crust is firm snow affected by the heat and rain of Saturday. The early December crust is still present lower down in the snowpack and facetted grains continue to develop on its surface with the cold temperatures forecast. In the alpine, areas of rock-bottom clearing alternate with accumulations in gullies, depressions and other leeward areas. The average height of the snow cover is still very thin, from about 30-40 cm in the valley to 60-90 cm in the mid-mountains, and extremely variable from one place to another.
