Weather Forecast

Wednesday should see cloudy conditions, isolated flurries and strong West winds. Thursday could see as much as 25cm of new snow with winds reaching 100km/h.

Avalanche Summary

No new observations today, but visibility was limited.

Snowpack Summary

1 to 4cm of new snow overnight. Continued strong west winds add to the recently formed wind slabs on North, East and South East aspects in the Alpine and open areas at Treeline. Windward slopes have been stripped down to scree/rock. Major concen remains for the persistent weak basal layer of facets/depth hoar/crust.

Avalanche Problems

Persistent Slabs

Avalanches could step down to the basal October layers and involve the entire winters snowpack, especially in shallow snowpack areas. In some areas a dense wind slab overlies this weak layer, so large and destructive avalanches are possible.
Be aware of the potential for full depth avalanches due to deeply buried weak layers.>Be aware of thin areas that may propogate to deeper instabilites.>

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 2 - 4

Wind Slabs

Wind slab formation continues in Treeline and Alpine areas. There is significant variability in the sensitivity and distribution of these slabs so be sure to investigate the snowpack before choosing your line.
Avoid lee and cross-loaded terrain near ridge crests.>Avoid freshly wind loaded features.>Watch for areas of hard wind slab in steep alpine features.>

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3
