Our current snowpack is difficult to asses. Due to the variability, snowpack observations hold little weight over large areas of terrain.

Summary

Weather Forecast

Warming trend through the week with valley bottom temperatures forecasted to reach above freezing. Precipe expected latter in the the week with forecasted accumulation amount quite varied at this times.

Snowpack Summary

These slabs overly a highly variable snowpack that consist mainly of facets, this facet / slab is the main concern in the snowpack. In most shelter areas and at lower elevators the snowpack has little to no structure.

Problems

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs

Winds from the north have created hard wind slabs in many areas, at alpine and tree line elevations. These slabs are hard to trigger, with a single person. This is becoming less likely to initiate and will likely phase out soon.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size

1 - 2

Persistent Slabs

Facets buried on Dec 19 are down 50-70 cm in some locations. This is a concern wherever a more cohesive slab of snow sits on top of this weakness. Wind loaded areas seem to be the primary concern.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size

2 - 3
