Summary

Weather Forecast

Overcast tonight becoming a mix of high cloud, light winds, and some sunny periods and about -8 in the alpine on Wednesday. High overcast on Thursday with light Southeast winds and -5 in the alpine. Cloud developing on Friday with snow in the late morning and increasing Southwest winds.

Snowpack Summary

As we begin our forecasting season, we are working with limited information from the field. This forecast is primarily based off weather station data and a few field observations.A report from the Ashman area describes a snow depth of 60 cm at 1100 metres elevation and 100 cm snow depth at 1500 metres elevation; 20-30 cm of facetted snow above a crust at treeline and 30 cm above the crust in the alpine in areas protected from the wind. Extensive wind effect has developed pockets of wind slab in the alpine and at treeline.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Northeast winds developed pockets of windslab at higher elevations. These windslabs may be sitting on a hard crust that could act as an easy sliding surface.

Be cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.>Avoid travelling in areas that have been reverse loaded by winds.>
