Regions: Glacier.

A fresh dusting on a moderate surface crust, accompanied by cooler temperatures today, should keep the hazard at moderate today.

Weather Forecast

Scattered flurries with the occasional sunny break should dominate the weather pattern for the day. Freezing levels may climb to 1500m, but this is relatively cool for this time of year. Winds will be moderate from the west.

Snowpack Summary

Yesterday's storm brought 5-10cm to the alpine, with a light dusting to 1300m. Below this fresh snow, a minor crust recovery occurred overnight that supports the weight of a person. Several crusts exist in the top meter of the snowpack on solar aspects. Isothermal snow developing below tree line.

Avalanche Summary

5 natural avalanches up to size 2.5 in the highway corridor yesterday, with the deposits being wet, concrete-like mounds in the run-out zones.

Confidence

Avalanche Problems

Loose Wet

A 2cm surface crust formed overnight, supporting the weight of a person. This crust will break down rapidly if the sun comes out today, especially at low elevations and on solar aspects.
Make your travel plans to take advantage of overnight freezing.Start and finish early before the surface crusts melt.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Persistent Slabs

As the upper snowpack becomes isothermal, buried layers like the various March sun crusts will become failure planes for the wet snow to slide upon.
Be aware of the potential for full depth avalanches due to deeply buried weak layers.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 3 - 4
