Regions: Glacier.

An additional 20cm of new snow, strong variable (SW to NW) winds and mild temperatures are forecast. If the forecast is accurate, the storm slab (see problem 1) will be easily triggered by skiers and natural avalanches are expected.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

Over the past 24hrs, 14cm of new snow has fallen under the influence of moderate SW winds and mild temperatures forming a soft storm slab. Large surface hoar crystals and a sun crust on steep south aspects down 25cm will be easily triggered.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Deep Persistent Slabs

A weak facetted basal crust is present in the alpine and has been responsible for large avalanches. Thin snowpack areas, along ridgecrests and in rocky areas have also facetted. These deep layers may be triggered by skiers from thin snowpack areas.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely

Expected Size: 2 - 4

Persistent Slabs

Unusual for this time of year, large gaping glide cracks are present throughout the area at all elevations. Glide crack releases are hard to predict and can produce large slab avalanches.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 3
