Snowpack Summary

A recent storm deposited 50 to 70 cm of snow and was redistributed by strong southerly winds across all elevations. Winds have since shifted from the north and wind slabs are now found on all aspects and at all elevations.

The mid and lower snowpack is reported to be well settled, with a thick, well-bonded crust approximately 30 to 50 cm above the ground at elevations below 1200 m. Snow depth ranges from 75 to 200 cm across the region.

Cloudy with flurries up to 5 cm. Light to moderate southeast wind. Treeline temperature around -11 °C. Possible temperature inversion.

Friday

Cloudy with snowfall beginning in the pm 15-20 cm. Moderate southeast wind . Treeline temperature around -8 °C. Possible temperature inversion.

Saturday

Cloudy with snowfall expect overnight totals around 30 cm. Strong southerly wind. Treeline temperature rising to -3 °C.

Sunday

Daytime clearing with light flurries. Trace amounts of new snow. Moderate south west wind. Treeline temperature rising to -5 °C.

  • Recent wind has varied in direction so watch for wind slabs on all aspects.
  • Watch for areas of hard wind slab on alpine features.
  • Stay off recently wind loaded slopes until they have had a chance to stabilize.

50-70 cm of storm snow and recent shifting winds have formed wind slabs on a variety of aspects. The freshest, most reactive wind slabs may be found in atypical features in the alpine due to reverse-loading by northeast wind.
