Avalanche Forecast
Regions: Glacier.
Watch for fresh pockets of windslab today if/when the winds pick up.
Weather Forecast
A system making landfall over the mid coast will push a series of warm fronts inland over the next couple of days. Winds will increase through out the day today, with snowfall beginning late this afternoon.
Snowpack Summary
10cm of settling snow sits on top of surface hoar and a thin crust on steep S aspects. Recent cold temps have facetted the upper snowpack, but have not penetrated into the stiff snow that overlies the Dec 11th surface hoar (5-12mm) which persists down 90-130cm. Several crusts exist in the rounding lower snowpack.
Avalanche Summary
A few small loose snow avalanches were triggered by the sun yesterday.
Confidence
Timing, track, or intensity of incoming weather system is uncertain
Avalanche Problems
Wind Slabs
The windslabs formed last week have not been reactive to skier traffic recently, but increasing winds this afternoon may build fresh windslabs.
- Be careful with wind loaded pockets, especially near ridge crests and roll-overs.
Aspects: North, North East, East.
Elevations: Alpine.
Likelihood: Possible
Expected Size: 1 - 1.5
Persistent Slabs
The surface hoar layer down a meter is well preserved in some areas and human triggering remains possible. Due to the depth of this layer the resulting avalanche would be large.
- Use caution on open slopes and convex rolls where buried surface hoar may be preserved.
- Be wary of slopes that did not previously avalanche.
Aspects: All aspects.
Elevations: All elevations.
Likelihood: Unlikely
Expected Size: 2 - 3.5
