Avalanche Forecast

Issued: Nov 6th, 2020 8:04AM

The alpine rating is moderate, the treeline rating is low, and the below treeline rating is low. Known problems include Storm Slabs.

jonas hoke,

Expect rugged travel in the shallow and refrozen snowpack at lower elevations. Remember to think about avalanche hazard as travel improves with elevation; we recently received over 50cm of snow up high.

Summary

Weather Forecast

Cool temps and mostly stable weather are forecast for the weekend.

Friday: A mix of sun and cloud. Alpine High -4 C, Low -8 C. Light ridge wind. Freezing level (Fzl): 1400 m.

Saturday: A mix of sun and cloud. Alpine High -8 C. Ridge wind light NE. Fzl: 1000 m.

Sunday: Sunny. Alpine Low -15 C, High -9 C. Ridge wind light NE. Fzl 500m.

Snowpack Summary

The recent wet storm saturated the snowpack below 2400m. Over 50cm of new snow fell in the upper alpine, accompanied by W winds of up to 160km/hr. A cooling trend followed, and has refrozen this saturated snow. It continued to snow as it cooled, so there may be some low density snow over the previously devastated surfaces as you gain elevation.

Avalanche Summary

Numerous loose wet avalanches up to size 3 (large) were observed in the highway corridor yesterday from all aspects. No backcountry observations have been made since the onset of the storm, but I suspect a similar cycle to have occurred.

Confidence

Due to the number and quality of field observations

Problems

Storm Slabs

An icon showing Storm Slabs

Extreme wind and heavy snow recently built slabs in the Alpine.  It has since cooled, but  these may remain reactive in the high alpine.

  • The new snow will require several days to settle and stabilize.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine.
