Avalanche Problems

Loose Dry

Recent natural avalanches have been loose from steep rocky terrain in the alpine. Approximately 35cm of low density storm snow runs quickly on the well settled snowpack below. Skiers sluffs are fast moving and pick up mass, traveling long distances.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Wind Slabs

Recent variable winds have transported snow forming soft slabs in exposed terrain at treeline and above on most aspects. Forecast strong northerly winds may form hardslabs at ridgecrests.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

Very large avalanches have failed on a persistent weak layer near the ground. Avalanche control and a skier accidental last week produced avalanches up to 2m deep. This layer may be easily triggered from thin snowpack areas, or by a large trigger.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 4
