Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Since Dec 24, storm snow amounts total 40 cm (Lake Louise), 55 (Sunshine) , 60 (Bow Summit). SW winds have created touchy slabs 60-150 cm thick. Natural avalanches continue with on-going wind loading. Winds will taper and skies will clear tomorrow.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Deep Persistent Slabs

Large windslab releases continue to step down into the basal weak facets creating large avalanches. Size 3 Natural over Sacre Blue climb on Rundle today, photos on the mountain conditions report.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 2 - 3

Storm Slabs

The December 10 surface hoar is down approximately 60-70 cm. The distribution of this layer is spotty but mostly on the west side of the Divide (Mt. Whymper, Takakaw Falls). Avoid steep walled gully features, or steeper open slopes.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2
