Avalanche Summary

On Friday, few size 1 were reported on south aspects at treeline and above. These included natural loose dry avalanches as well as skier triggered wind slab avalanches.

Snowpack Summary

Up to 10 cm of recent snow sits above a variety of old snow surfaces including firm wind slabs, sun crust on steep solar aspects, surface hoar and faceted crystal in sheltered areas. The recent low-density snow may still have a poor bond to the previous snow surfaces. The lower snowpack is generally strong and settled.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
