Avalanche Activity

More recent wind slabs represent the main danger. They will be covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise.

The sometimes new snow-covered wind slabs of the weekend can be released by a single winter sport participant. Above approximately 2500 m these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. These avalanche prone locations are to be found on steep slopes and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls, in particular in the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable). As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind from southwesterly directions, further wind slabs will form from early morning.

Snowpack Structure

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field. Some snow will fall from late morning. The upper section of the snowpack is unfavourably layered, especially at intermediate and high altitudes. Up to 2400 m rain fell on Friday. As a consequence of falling temperatures a crust formed on the surface on Saturday. Below approximately 2400 m the snowpack is more stable.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist.
