Moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming.
Moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming.
The high temperatures from the late morning will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. These conditions will bring about a gradual weakening of the snowpack as the day progresses. Above approximately 2200 m mostly small moist and wet avalanches are possible. In these regions less snow than usual is lying. In particular at low and intermediate altitudes from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying.
The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust only at high altitudes and will soften during the day. On sunny slopes as well as at low and intermediate altitudes hardly any snow is lying.
As a consequence of warming the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses.
