Regions

South Coast, North Shore, Sasquatch, Sasquatch, Sky Pilot, Tetrahedron.

Cautiously assess conditions as you travel - the fresh snow may produce reactive slabs or, more likely, hide early-season hazards.

Low

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been observed or reported in the region, however, observations are limited at this time of year. If you head into the backcountry consider submitting a MIN report.

Snowpack Summary

Overnight snow will cover a melt-freeze crust and moist snowpack. Snow depths are 20-80 cm at upper elevations. The snow-dirt line is found around 1200 m, and most solar slopes and below treeline are below the threshold for avalanches.

Weather Summary

Saturday night

Heavy precipitation and extreme southwest wind will peak around midnight before temperatures cool and winds decrease. 20-35 mm precipitation overnight, ridgeline high +2 C, snow-rain line peaking around 1200 m.

Sunday

Up to 30 cm of new snow at upper elevations by morning. Strong northwest wind decreasing to moderate through the day, treeline temperatures dropping to -6 C, and freezing level dropping below 500 m.

Monday

Cold and sunny with patchy clouds. Light to moderate northeast wind, treeline temperatures around -10 C, and freezing level falling to valley bottom.

Tuesday

Cold, with a mix of sun and cloud. Moderate southwest wind, treeline temperatures around -8 C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Investigate the bond of the recent snow before committing to your line.
  • Avoid freshly wind loaded terrain features.
  • Dial back your terrain choices if you are seeing more than 25cm of new snow.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
