Regions

Kananaskis, Bow Valley, Highwood Pass, North 40, Spray - KLakes.

And just like that, the tables have turned. 10-40cm came in last night with more on the way. Expect great skiing by Tuesday, but remember to take a peak at the old/new snow interface, especially if there's a windslab on it.

Confidence

Avalanche Summary

No slabs were seen today, but there was evidence of mid storm loose dry avalanches today in steeper alpine terrain.

Snowpack Summary

Yesterday's snow ended up producing a fair bit. The region saw 15-40cm overnight, with heavier amounts to the south. The Black Prince area had 20-40cm of light, cold snow. A lack of avalanche activity suggests the old and new snow is cooperating and bonding well. Winds did build today with significant wind transport along alpine ridges. Expect new wind slabs in immediate lee areas. On sunny aspects the storm snow rapidly settled with the warmth. A quick profile had a very positive look and feel. We had 190cm at treeline with a nice progressive density change. Where we dug (Black Prince) the Jan surface hoar was a non issue, but that layer should remain on your list of questions as you explore.

Weather Summary

Monday will start out with light cloud, but by mid afternoon snow will start...that's right, snow. Hopefully we'll have 20cm by 8am Tuesday. Winds will start out gusty and random as the storm makes its entrance, but by mid storm the winds will sort themselves out and drop slightly. Looks like ridge winds will be south at 20km/hr as the storm wears out. Temperatures will fall from -5 to -11 as the snow plays out.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
