Regions

Glacier.

The drought continues at Rogers Pass, with a widespread surface crust making travel challenging across most terrain.

Softer snow can be found in isolated, shaded locations, where the cold weather has faceted the surface.

Snow will arrive later in the week, hopefully to freshen things up in the hills!

Confidence

High

  • We are confident due to a stable weather pattern.

Avalanche Summary

Surface sluffing, large enough to bump a person from their feet, was reported in steep, N-facing terrain in the Asulkan Valley yesterday. This was from the faceted upper snowpack.

Neighbours are reporting pin wheeling off of steep, rocky, solar aspects and the occasional natural cornice release.

Snowpack Summary

A light dusting today (<5cm) covered the widespread surface hoar/crust. The surface hoar is on most aspects and elevations, while the crust it sits upon is highly variable. The crust is generally more supportive on solar aspects, but weakening/faceting on polar aspects.

The mid and lower snowpacks are generally well settled and strong. A thin surface hoar layer, down approximately 1 m below the surface, has shown no recent reactivity and continues to break down.
