Highlights

Above 8000 feet, skiers and riders have a chance to trigger isolated pockets of surface slab with depths to of six to eighteen inches as well as slight chance to trigger older and larger slabs where deep instabilities persist in the snowpack. Yesterday a snowmobile triggered and outran a large slab avalanche with a forty inch crown on a north facing slope near Grouse mountain. Avalanches are unlikely below 8000 feet where the snowpack is mostly stable.

    Old weak layers are well preserved in the snowpack. Although unlikely, the chance exists to trigger large hard slab avalanches with depths that could reach over three feet upon one of these layers. Areas where these weaknesses may be found are steep avalanche paths that have not seen much traffic throughout the season, particularly those with northerly aspects. Larger triggers such as snowmobiles or groups of skiers may be necessary to initiate failure of these slabs.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )This pattern of snow showers is to continue through Saturday. Accumulations will remain light with one to four inches of additional snow expected. Temperatures will remain cool with mountain temperatures starting in the single digits and rising into the upper teens. Winds are to remain light and back from the west to the east by Saturday afternoon. The general avalanche hazard will be LOW in the Teton and Togwotee Pass areas. Above 8000 feet in isolated areas, pockets of surface slab could be triggered in wind loaded areas. These slabs could have depths to twelve inches.UPDATE: In the Togwotee Pass area, the hazard will be rated as Moderate. Although unlikely, a slight chance exists to trigger large avalanches that lie upon old buried weak layers in isolated areas.
