Avalanche Summary

Avalanches are becoming harder to trigger, but the hazard is slow to heal and exists on a wide range of slopes. The most problematic and dangerous slopes are those where recently formed slabs rest on buried weak layers, 1 to 3 feet thick. You are more likely to trigger a slide where slabs are thinner and can trigger a large avalanche from above, below, or adjacent to steep slopes. Lower-angle, wind-sheltered slopes are a safer bet to avoid this problem.
