Avalanche Summary
An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the southeast San Juan Mountains, including areas around Wolf Creek Pass, Cumbres, and La Manga Passes. Dangerous avalanche conditions build during the day on Thursday and last through Friday.
New snow is forming thick slabs at all elevations. The wind is drifting the thickest slabs on north to east-facing slopes. Cautious route finding and identifying areas of unstable snow are essential to staying safer in the backcountry. Look for cracks shooting across the slopes in front of you and signs of recent avalanche activity as indicators of rapidly rising danger. Slopes less than about 30 degrees without steep slopes above offer safer travel options today.
