Avoid wind-drifted snow to avoid most avalanche concerns. You are most likely to find freshly drifted slabs of snow on north through east to south-facing slopes. Shooting cracks in the snow are a warning sign that you can trigger avalanches. Also, pay attention to and consider avoiding steep slopes where the snow feels much harder than sheltered slopes, even if you don't observe shooting cracks.
