Most slopes are safe from avalanches. At the highest elevations of the Grand and Battlement Mesas, you might be able to trigger a small slab avalanche on a previously wind-loaded terrain feature that faces north or northeast. If you locate one of these steep spots with a stiff layer of snow in the middle of the snowpack, steer around it to avoid the concern. Even a small avalanche combined with terrain traps such as cliffs, rivers, or dense trees can be dangerous.
