Facets at and below the new snow/old snow interface are the primary layers of concern. Wind effect during the most recent storm cycle has complicated this situation, creating slabs hardened by the wind with weak layers underneath. Current weak layers include radiation-formed facets above melt-freeze crusts to facets associated with the pre-St. Patrick's storm dry period. Furthermore, it is possible that this problem could be triggered by the release of a smaller wind slab or wet loose avalanche that could "step down" and trigger these persistent weak layers.
Due to the isolated distribution of these weak layers, avalanches are likely to be D1-D2 in size, but could have crown heights of 18"-24" or more. The hard slabs formed by storm winds may partially or fully bury an individual, but the real consequence may be traumatic bodily injury. Skiers and riders are encouraged to be cautious in steep, rocky, and complex locations where chutes or skiable lines involve a change in aspect. Ski one at a time, keep eyes on one another, and utilize safer zones when ascending and descending. Make conservative decisions, especially where features such as rocks, cliffs, and gullies would be complicated by a small avalanche.
On Wednesday, a D2 avalanche was triggered on the skin track out of the Humphrey's Cirque (HS-ASr-R1D2-I). This avalanche was remotely triggered by a collapse and shooting crack that ran towards a rock outcrop and could have gone larger. Fortunately, no one was caught in this event. It was released on an old snow/new snow interface, specifically on facets above a thin, harder layer that was likely a solar or wind crust.

The D2 slab avalanche remotely triggered on the skin track exiting Humphrey's Cirque. This avalanche was nearly larger as a substantial crack permeated an additional 100 feet beyond the crown but did not propagate. Fortunately, no one was caught in this event.
