With a foot or more of new snow already on the ground and another 2+ feet expected today, there is no shortage of snow available for wind transport. Today, a major wind event is impacting the area with steady ridgetop winds of 50mph and gusts to the 70s. Expect snow to be blowing around today and forming very reactive wind slabs in the new snow.
With wind speeds this strong, be alert for unusual wind loading locations. Expect to see wind slab lower on the slope than you normally would, or to see usually sheltered terrain develop wind slab as the strong wind reaches into sheltered terrain.
Observations are already showing sensitive wind slabs ahead of the new snow and current storm. On Tuesday, WCMAC staff found reactive windslab in the Brushy Fork of the northern Bitterroot. In the southern Bitterroot, multiple observations showed wind transport and fresh wind slabs earlier in the week. By the end of the day today, expect wind slabs larger and more dangerous than anything we have seen in observations this week.
Slope angle will be the only way to avoid this problem. Avalanches are unlikely on slopes under 30 degrees in slope angle. Avoid low angle terrain with steeper avalanche terrain above as avalanches could be remotely triggered or fail naturally.
Lolo Pass falls within the low elevation band. Although this band is not shaded in the location infographic, expect reactive wind slabs above Lolo Pass!
