This morning marks a lull in storm activity with winds increasing this afternoon and into the evening. Yesterday's observations found a stable snowpack, but take care when traveling on the mountain, particularly anywhere above treeline. New snow is expected to come in later this evening. If you're out and about in the backcountry, keep an eye out for anything starting earlier than predicted.
Although yesterday's observations revealed that the new snow had bonded well to the existing snowpack, moderate winds throughout the day leave open the possibility for isolated wind slabs, particularly just at or above treeline. Lowering temperatures accompanying the incoming precipitation will bring lighter density snow and the potential for more wind transport as things continue.
The new snow from the past 24 hours bonded well to existing surfaces in the areas we observed. However, this is a 24-hour forecast, and with plenty of snowfall predicted over the next day, the possibility for Storm Slabs is very real. Take care when traveling in exposed, steep terrain. As always, keep an eye out for red flags such as shooting cracks, whumphing, or signs of instability.
