Highlights

You could still encounter isolated wind slab instabilities in alpine terrain above 8000 ft. Another clear day and warm temperatures may lead to surface softening and minor wet snow issues on steep, south facing terrain. Widespread, slick surfaces and challenging travel will be one of your most significant mountain hazards during this time. 

Avalanche Discussion

The avalanche danger is LOW, but that doesn’t mean there is no chance of avalanches. 

As you climb above 8000 ft, you’ll start noticing drier snow and more wind affected surfaces. It's at these elevations and higher, that you may find lingering wind slab instabilities on slopes that promote drifting. While most of these slabs will be small, they can still be consequential in steep terrain, especially paired with our firm surfaces. Any triggered avalanche could turn into a long, sliding fall scenario at these higher elevations.

Most wet avalanche concerns have passed, but continue to track warming as the day heats up. Rollerballs and deep boot penetrations in wet snow are good enough reasons to head for colder, firmer slopes. Don’t underestimate wet snow in bigger terrain either. Wet loose avalanches can grow to more surprising sizes in cliffy south south facing terrain like Gnarl Ridge or sections of the White River. 

One of the biggest hazards right now is the challenging travel and slick surfaces. Long, sliding falls have proven dangerous or even deadly on Mt.Hood over the years. Come prepared with the right gear and ability to move over firm snow before heading into alpine terrain. Also, consider the consequence of losing a ski edge on a steep line. Ski and splitboard edges don’t penetrate ice well, so carefully evaluate surface softening and snow quality before committing to steeper features.

Lower elevations are variable. You’ll generally find a mixed bag of rain runnels, crusts, and punchy surfaces.
