Snowpack Summary
In the alpine, conditions vary between frozen surfaces and accumulations of wind-blown snow. A breakable melt-freeze crust is present on the surface, possibly even in alpine terrain. This crust makes travel difficult. Beneath this, a second, rather thin crust lies at a depth of 10 to 15 cm. A third crust, this time very firm and thick, lies 20 to 30 cm from the surface.
The middle of the snowpack consists of alternating well-settled snow and melt-freeze crusts.
At higher elevations, east- and southeast-facing slopes have better snow coverage, while west and north-facing aspects are more scoured. At mid-mountain, snow depth ranges from 60 to 180â¯cm.

Terrain and Travel Advice
- A hard crust on the snow surface will help strengthen the snowpack, but may cause tough travel conditions.
