Wind slabs in high Alpine regions. There is a danger of falling on the icy crust.
Wind slabs in high Alpine regions. There is a danger of falling on the icy crust.
Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls mostly small wind slabs formed. They can be released in isolated cases, but mostly only by large additional loads,. In these regions hardly any more natural avalanches are to be expected. Over a wide area new snow is lying on an icy crust. Even in relatively flat terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust.
Wind slabs are lying mostly on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. Over a wide area from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
