Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase.

5 to 10 cm of snow will fall until Monday above approximately 2300 m. As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations will form from early morning. These are to be found in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, not only adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. They are mostly rather small but to be assessed critically. In high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. As a consequence of new snow and wind mostly small dry and moist avalanches are to be expected. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep slopes at intermediate and high altitudes. They can be released in particular at the base of rock walls. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches.

Snowpack Structure

5 to 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Friday above approximately 2300 m. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In some cases the various wind slabs have bonded still only poorly with the old snowpack, in particular at high altitude. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to gradual moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2800 m. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m.
